Goa is set for a major expansion of its road infrastructure after Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced Centre-backed projects with a combined estimated value of Rs. 40 bn. The proposals are intended to improve connectivity across key parts of the state and address rising traffic and transport requirements.

The main projects include widening the Mollem-Khandepar road stretch and constructing a new bridge at Borim. Each project has been estimated at about Rs. 20 bn, making them the largest components of the announced infrastructure programme.

The Centre has also accepted Goa’s proposal for two additional national highway links. These are the Balli to Betul ONGC route and the Karaswada to Sanquelim route, which are expected to improve links between important locations and support movement across the state.

Work on the proposed Borim bridge will proceed after Goa completes the required land acquisition and environmental clearance processes. The Union government will release funding for the project once these conditions have been met, according to the announcement.

The projects were announced during the inauguration of the new Porvorim elevated corridor. The corridor’s opening and the additional road proposals mark a significant infrastructure push for Goa, with the planned investments focused on widening existing routes, adding highway connections and developing new crossings.

The state’s road network is expected to benefit from improved capacity and more direct links between urban, industrial and other high-traffic areas. However, the timelines for the new projects will depend on the completion of clearances and land-related procedures before construction can begin.
