The Central Government has sanctioned a Rs 71 billion project to upgrade the Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway (NH-65) into a six-lane expressway. Spanning 161.5 km from Sangareddy to Choutuppal, this expansion aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance safety, particularly in accident-prone areas like Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Nandigama.
Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy emphasized the project's role in boosting regional connectivity and economic development. He highlighted that Telangana's national highway network has more than doubled over the past decade, growing from 2,500 km in 2014 to 5,200 km today.
The initiative also reflects the efforts of Telangana Minister Komatireddy Venkata Reddy, who advocated for the expansion following personal tragedy and concerns over highway safety. His lobbying played a significant role in securing approval from Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
This project is part of a broader infrastructure push, with the Centre investing over Rs 1.26 trillion in Telangana's road network over the past ten years. The six-lane expressway is expected to facilitate smoother travel between Hyderabad and Vijayawada, supporting both commuter and commercial traffic.
Construction is slated to commence within the next three months, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the region's transportation infrastructure.
