In a major push to upgrade civic infrastructure and urban healthcare, Krishnagar Municipality on Tuesday formally launched construction on 20 roads at a total cost of Rs 41.7 million (mn) under the state-funded Pathashree-IV scheme, marking one of the largest single-phase road infrastructure initiatives undertaken in the town in recent years. The works form part of a broader phase of planned urban renewal in the historic town and include the simultaneous initiation of two new Urban Health and Wellness Centres. The initiative aims to improve last-mile connectivity and primary healthcare access for residents.

The inauguration was attended by minister Ujjal Biswas, district magistrate Aneesh Dasgupta, municipal administrator and sub-divisional officer Sharadwati Chowdhury, senior officials of the Municipal Engineering Directorate (MED) and other civic functionaries alongside local residents. The district magistrate said the Pathashree roads are being implemented entirely with state government funds and emphasised the administration's commitment to improving municipal connectivity. Officials indicated that works would be carried out in a time-bound manner to ensure residents benefit at the earliest.

Officials noted that out of 27 sanctioned roads for Krishnagar Municipality, work on three had already begun earlier and construction on 20 additional roads is being initiated under the current phase. They also announced that sanction for two Urban Health and Wellness Centres had been received and that construction of the centres was being formally initiated from the same platform. The new centres will be located at Ward number one, to be named Yogiraj Shyamacharan Lahiri Urban Health Centre, and at Ward number 24, to be named Dishari Urban Health Centre, strengthening primary healthcare in densely populated neighbourhoods.

The MED, which is the implementing agency for all Pathashree-IV works, will execute the projects under close technical supervision, officials said. The total project cost for the 20 roads stands at Rs 41.7 mn, covering blacktop and cement concrete surfacing across 15 municipal wards. Ministers and administrators indicated that Krishnagar is witnessing a visible transformation driven by coordinated administrative efforts and sustained government investment in urban services.
