In a significant boost to Mumbai’s urban mobility, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved its first underground tunnel breakthrough on Metro Line 7A. The 3.4-km corridor, linking Andheri East to CSMIA Terminal 2, includes a 2.5-km underground stretch, with the tunnel breakthrough near Vile Parle. This marks MMRDA’s first underground metro initiative in the city. Executed using a Tunnel Boring Machine lowered 30 metres underground in 2023, the project overcomes complex geology and urban utilities. Once complete, Line 7A will enhance airport access and support Mumbai’s climate-resilient, congestion-free transport vision.
