As Mumbai prepares to open two major sections of its expansive seafront promenade this week, the city’s civic authority has secured a key coastal clearance to advance further construction. The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has approved the commencement of work on the segment between Haji Ali and Baroda Palace, with tendering expected soon after project cost assessments.

The promenade, stretching 7.5 km in length and 20 metres wide, is being designed as a flagship open space for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Two critical stretches—2.75 km from Tata Garden to Haji Ali and 2.5 km from Lovegrove Nullah to B M Thackeray Chowk—have already been completed in line with the revised 15 July deadline.

While six access points—including Tata Garden, Haji Ali Juice Centre, and Mahalaxmi Temple—will initially open to the public, the final five will remain closed until the last 2.25 km stretch is finished.

In parallel, a redesigned four-storey underground parking facility at Haji Ali, planned to accommodate 1,200 cars, is moving ahead, with tenders to be issued shortly. However, a proposed 1 km promenade section near the parking has been scrapped due to traffic safety concerns.

As part of a Rs 4 billion corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, Reliance Industries Limited is overseeing the landscaping of 53 hectares of reclaimed open space. The design will adhere to environmental and zoning regulations.
