National Highway Expansion Strengthens North Telangana Links

National Highway (NH) infrastructure has expanded across the undivided Nizamabad region, with improvements to NH-44, NH-63 and NH-161 enhancing road connectivity in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been undertaking a series of upgrade and widening projects in response to rising passenger and freight traffic. The initiatives form part of a broader effort to integrate long distance corridors and regional links. Transport planners are coordinating work on key stretches that serve interstate movements.

The Salura–Nizamabad road in Bodhan mandal has been proposed for widening under the NH-63 corridor, while the widening of NH-44, which links Kashmir and Kanyakumari, has increased vehicular movement through Nizamabad district. Toll plazas have been established along the main highway in the undivided Adilabad, Nizamabad and Medak districts to regulate traffic and collect user fees. NH-63 now extends to Salura on the Telangana–Maharashtra border and connects Nizamabad with Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh. These upgrades include pavement strengthening and shoulder improvements.

The Sangareddy–Nanded–Akola corridor, designated as NH-161, has been widened from Sangareddy to Madnoor in Kamareddy district, improving speeds and reducing travel times for regional traffic. The enhanced route has strengthened links between Telangana, Maharashtra and Karnataka and supports daily commuting and commercial movements. People from Kamareddy, Nanded and Bidar now have improved access when travelling to Hyderabad, facilitating economic and social ties. The corridor upgrade also complements other interstate projects to streamline freight corridors.

Residents along upgraded and ongoing sections have called for construction of bypass roads and bridges across streams and rivulets to enhance safety and resilience during heavy rains. Motorists have raised concerns about incomplete works on the Bodhan–Nizamabad stretch, noting hazards for two-wheeler riders and other road users. NHAI officials are preparing detailed plans for further widening and complementary infrastructure in Nizamabad district to address identified gaps. Continued coordination with district authorities is under way to sequence works and manage traffic during construction.
