Athikulam and Palanisamy Nagar in Madurai North constituency are set to receive new tar roads at an estimated cost of Rs 12 million, according to DMK MLA G. Thalapathi.
Speaking on Saturday, the MLA said the Madurai Corporation had earmarked funds for road laying across all 100 wards. Surveys have been completed, tenders finalised, and contracts awarded. He stressed that quality would not be compromised and all work would adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) defined by the civic body.
Alongside Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth, the MLA also inaugurated a children’s park on DRO Colony Main Road and opened an anganwadi and a community centre at Jawaharpuram and Viswanathapuram, all under Zone 2, Ward 15.
Meanwhile, Minister P. Moorthy inspected progress on the AMRUT drinking water project at Narayanapuram, which sources potable water from the Mullaperiyar River. Officials including Collector M.S. Sangeetha and Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan reported that trial runs for water pumping are ongoing in several wards, though some initial technical issues such as pipe leaks and bursts are being addressed.
The Minister urged officials to speed up the project and also reviewed underground drainage (UGD) works in newly added wards. Road development efforts in Madurai West Assembly constituency were also discussed during the visit.
