The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is advancing plans to construct a vehicular underpass (VuP) at the G Corner junction in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Tamil Nadu, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance road safety. This initiative follows the abandonment of a previously proposed overpass due to technical and land acquisition challenges.
The proposed underpass is designed to connect service roads flanking the Trichy-Chennai National Highway (NH), facilitating smoother traffic flow and reducing accidents. Approximately 3,100 square meters of land from Indian Railways is required for the project. A joint survey by NHAI and railway officials has been conducted to assess land requirements and plan modifications to existing service roads.
The underpass will feature an 18-foot clearance to accommodate heavy vehicles, particularly those accessing the Golden Rock railway workshop. This development is expected to significantly reduce the risk of accidents at the G Corner junction, which has witnessed multiple fatalities in recent years due to inadequate infrastructure.
Local Member of Parliament Durai Vaiko has pledged to coordinate with central authorities to expedite funding and approvals for the project. The collaboration between NHAI and Indian Railways marks a concerted effort to address longstanding traffic issues in the region.
