The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will undertake a feasibility study for a proposed underpass at the Khandsa intersection in Gurugram to help decongest traffic between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk. The underpass is intended to improve vehicle movement from Sector 10 Road to Mohammadpur Jharsa Road, with the study expected to conclude by next month.

The proposal was discussed in a recent review meeting chaired by Union Minister and Gurugram MP Rao Inderjit Singh, who supported the plan and highlighted its potential to streamline traffic at the busy junction.

A senior NHAI official noted that the study would consider land availability and technical viability before final approval. “The aim is to enable smoother vehicle flow at Khandsa, but detailed assessments are required before proceeding,” the official said.

Currently, NHAI is developing a six-lane surface road over a 3.2-kilometre stretch between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk at a total cost of Rs 1.6 billion. Of this, Rs 1 billion has been allocated for shifting utilities such as high-tension power lines, water pipelines, and sewers, while Rs 600 million will go towards actual road construction. Stormwater drain work has already begun, with utility relocations expected to be completed in six months.

A representative from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) stated that once NHAI submits a formal underpass proposal, it will be reviewed and forwarded to the state government for approval.

The arterial stretch sees heavy traffic inflow from NH-48, Sohna Road, Dwarka Expressway, and Old Gurugram, often leading to gridlocks during peak hours. Residents have consistently demanded improved infrastructure such as underpasses and flyovers to relieve long-standing congestion and enhance urban mobility.
