Nitin Gadkari urges Tesla to start EV production in India early

Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has urged US electric car maker Tesla to start electric vehicle (EV) production in India as soon as possible.

While addressing the Raisina Dialogue 2021 organised by the Ministry of External Affairs, Gadkari assured that the Indian government would help the EV maker create industrial clusters in the country.

Gadkari also assured that Tesla could develop its own vendors and export vehicles to other countries as well.

However, Tesla has not confirmed when it will start its EV production facilities in India. Currently, Tesla is only looking at selling its vehicles in major Indian cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi.

This year, Tesla had registered its Indian arm, Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Ltd, with RoC Bangalore. Once Tesla begins production in India, it would be its second facility in Asia outside China and will be a major boost for EV manufacturing in India.

As we have reported, Tesla is likely to start its India business this year, and reports say the company will begin by bringing in its most affordable Model 3 sedan by the end of the year. Tesla Model 3 will be reportedly imported through the 'completely built unit' route and is likely to be priced from Rs 55 lakh onwards.
