The Odisha government is accelerating infrastructure development as part of its vision for a fully developed state by 2036. At a high-level review held at Lokseva Bhawan’s Convention Hall, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Prithviraj Harichandan directed officials to ensure timely completion of infrastructure projects valued over Rs 500 million, while upholding quality standards.

The meeting focused on roads, bridges, and public buildings, highlighting the integration of artificial intelligence and digital systems such as WAMIS (Works and Accounts Management Information System) and OSWAS (Odisha Secretariat Workflow Automation System) to modernise infrastructure delivery.

A key announcement was the launch of a “Bridge Repair Policy” aimed at systematic upkeep of vital infrastructure. The minister also confirmed that a “Road Repair Policy” is in progress. “Achieving national leadership in infrastructure demands adoption of advanced techniques and frequent audits,” Harichandan remarked.

Among the major projects reviewed were the Brahmapur, Khordha, and Nayagarh bypasses; the Matiapada road overbridge (ROB) on the Puri-Konark Road; and high-level bridges across the Baitarani and Tel rivers. Attention was also given to developing the areas surrounding Maa Sarala and Chandi temples and building swimming pools in Nayagarh, Balasore, Jharsuguda, and Jajpur. Ring road projects in Brahmapur, Cuttack, and Puri were discussed, with efforts underway to resolve land acquisition and forest clearance hurdles.

Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh urged the department to shift from traditional practices and adopt digital workflows to streamline operations. He emphasised the use of WAMIS and OSWAS for transparency and efficiency.

While the minister expressed satisfaction with several ongoing works, he also warned contractors against delays. He directed immediate investigations into cases where contractors were found outsourcing work improperly and called for strict disciplinary measures.
