A proposal to upgrade the Patiala-Patran stretch of State Highway-10 in Punjab into a four lane corridor has been advanced by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Patiala and submitted to central authorities for consideration. The MP has sought the Centre's approval to address rising traffic congestion and mounting safety concerns along the route. The initiative is presented as a necessary response to increasing passenger and freight movement in the region.\n\nThe approximately 75 km stretch links Patiala, Samana, Ghagga and Patran and currently operates as a two lane highway that is considered inadequate for present traffic volumes. Local stakeholders have highlighted recurring bottlenecks during peak agricultural seasons that impede movement of produce and add to travel time for daily commuters. The corridor also forms an important link between Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, making its capacity constraints a regional concern.\n\nThe Union Road Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, has indicated that central support for such projects requires a formal proposal from the state government under national infrastructure planning mechanisms. The minister's statement places the onus on the Punjab government to initiate requisite studies and approvals before funding or central assistance can be contemplated. Officials say a state led submission would trigger feasibility assessments and clearances necessary for four laning.\n\nIf approved, the upgrade is expected to improve road safety, reduce travel time and enhance logistical efficiency across the Malwa region by enabling smoother movement of agricultural produce and commercial freight. The project is also projected to support regional economic activity and streamline supply chains that currently suffer from congestion and accident related delays. Planners note that careful design and implementation will be essential to realise these benefits while minimising disruption during construction.
