The ambitious elevated corridor project between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal, with an
anticipated investment of INR 58.55 billion, has been expedited by the National Highways Authority
of India (NHAI). Under the PM's Gati Shakti programme, a double-decker elevated motorway
measuring 20.6 km in length is being built.
Nitin Gadkari, the Union Transport Minister, announced that the project would be built in four phases, beginning inside the Chennai Port and concluding after the Maduravoyal junction. The goal is to finish by December 2024. The corridor will act as a dedicated freight lane for port traffic headed for Chennai and boost Chennai Port's handling capacity by 48%, cutting waiting times at the port by roughly six hours. Between Koyambedu and Chennai Port, the double-decker corridor's first level is intended for light cars, and it has 13 ramps for connecting to adjacent roadways.
