Reay Road Bridge Inaugurated to Boost South Mumbai Infrastructure
Mumbai is preparing to unveil a landmark addition to its urban infrastructure with the inauguration of the Reay Road Bridge on May 13, 2025. This new structure represents the city’s first land-based cable-stayed road overbridge, marking a notable achievement in modern engineering. Spanning 385 metres, the six-lane bridge includes separate pedestrian walkways and is designed to improve connectivity between Byculla and Mazgaon, while also easing traffic congestion in the surrounding areas.
The project began on February 14, 2022, after the demolition of the century-old British-era bridge it replaces. Although originally scheduled for an earlier completion, construction was finalized in December 2024, with the inauguration planned for nearly six months afterward. Developed at an estimated cost of ₹273 crore, the bridge is a collaborative effort by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and Indian Railways.
The bridge features a central pylon cable-stayed design, which reduces the need for multiple supporting piers. This minimizes disruption to underground utilities and enables a smoother flow of traffic beneath. The structure is also equipped with architectural LED lighting to enhance its aesthetic appeal and a bridge health monitoring system to ensure safety and facilitate ongoing maintenance.
Strategically located, the bridge connects Mahul Road near the Eastern Freeway to Barrister Nath Pai Marg, offering a direct route expected to significantly cut travel time for both commuters and freight carriers. The project also includes measures to maintain the necessary vertical clearance under the Eastern Freeway, in compliance with Indian Roads Congress standards.
The inauguration ceremony is set to take place at 7 PM on May 13 and will include the remote opening of another road overbridge at Titwala. This dual unveiling highlights Mumbai’s ongoing efforts to expand and modernize its transport infrastructure. As the city continues to grow, the Reay Road Bridge stands as a testament to its commitment to integrating advanced engineering practices that not only solve current mobility issues but also enhance the city's urban character both functionally and visually.
