Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna PSU, has emerged as the single largest steel supplier to the prestigious Zojila Tunnel project in Jammu and Kashmir, the Ministry of Steel confirmed in a recent statement. The under-construction Zojila Tunnel is set to become India's longest road tunnel and Asia's longest bi-directional tunnel upon completion.

SAIL has played a pivotal role in this strategic infrastructure initiative, supplying more than 31,000 tonnes of steel, which includes TMT Re-bars, Structurals, and Plates. This continuous supply showcases the company’s steadfast support as the project progresses toward its 2027 deadline.

"Mega-projects like the Zojila Tunnel consistently trust the reliability and strength of SAIL's steel, a testament to the company's dedication to quality and its pivotal role in shaping India's future," said the ministry.

Strategically located at an altitude of 11,578 feet in the challenging Himalayan terrain, the Zojila Tunnel will span over 30 kilometres, ensuring crucial all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh via Dras and Kargil. This makes it an integral part of the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway, aimed at boosting civilian and military mobility.

The ministry also highlighted SAIL's legacy of supporting major national infrastructure projects, such as the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and the Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel bridges.

According to Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, around 70 per cent of the tunnel work has already been completed, as mentioned during a response in the Lok Sabha this March.
