Commuters on Thane-Belapur Road in Navi Mumbai should brace for temporary night-time disruptions, as the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) commences critical road strengthening works. The upgrade will involve the closure of a key stretch between Savita Chemical and Turbhe Railway Station each night from 14 to 21 May, between 9 PM and midnight.
The NMMC has stressed that this work is essential to enhance the long-term durability and safety of one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares. The nightly closure will affect all vehicles, including two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, and private cars.
To formalise the restrictions, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Tirupati Kakade has issued a directive under the Motor Vehicles Act and a 1996 Maharashtra Government notification. In addition, traffic police have advised motorists to use alternative routes during the closure hours. Diversion plans and updates will be shared through local channels and official advisories.
While acknowledging the inconvenience caused, authorities are urging public cooperation to ensure the project is completed efficiently and safely. Active traffic management measures will be in place to minimise congestion on detour routes.
This temporary disruption forms part of a broader effort to maintain and future-proof Navi Mumbai’s critical infrastructure. By strengthening the Thane-Belapur Road, the NMMC aims to create a more resilient urban network, ensuring smoother commutes and improved road safety in the long run. The short-term inconvenience is a necessary step towards achieving a safer and more sustainable city transport system.
