Thane Coastal Road-1 Reaches 45 Per Cent Completion

The Thane Coastal Road-1 project has reached 45 per cent completion after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) installed 10 I-girders in a single day. The installation took place on 14 October 2026 and exceeded the project team’s usual daily output of four to six girders.

The 13.45 km project is being developed as a six-lane, access-controlled road connecting Kharegaon Toll Naka on National Highways 3 and 48 with Gaimukh. The corridor is intended to provide a more direct connection between the Mumbai–Nashik Highway and Gaimukh, while adding another route for traffic moving through the region.

I-girders are being installed as part of the construction of the road’s elevated sections. MMRDA reported that the project team completed the installation of all 10 girders within one day, marking a higher pace than the typical daily rate recorded during the work. Overall progress on the corridor has now reached 45 per cent.

Once operational, the road is expected to offer an alternative to Ghodbunder Road for commuters and freight traffic. The access-controlled design is intended to improve connectivity between the highway junction at Kharegaon and Gaimukh, potentially giving motorists another route alongside existing roads in the area.

The latest milestone highlights progress on the elevated portions of the project, which form an important part of the corridor’s construction. The project’s stated objective is to strengthen links between major roads in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and improve movement through the Thane area. Further construction will be required before the corridor can open to traffic.
