Trial Run Begins For India’s First Urban Ropeway In Varanasi

India’s first urban public transport ropeway began its trial run on Thursday in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, marking a major milestone in the nation’s urban mobility landscape.
According to Varanasi Development Authority Vice President Pulkit Garg, the 3.8-kilometre corridor will feature five stations, each equipped with spacious waiting areas and passenger-friendly facilities. Designed as eco-friendly infrastructure, the project aims to offer a sustainable and efficient alternative to road transport.
Built at a total cost of Rs 8.15 billion, which includes 15 years of operation and maintenance, the ropeway will comprise 148 gondolas capable of transporting nearly 100,000 passengers daily.
“This is a visionary, green project for Varanasi,” said Garg. “The 3.8-kilometre stretch will have five well-equipped stations with large holding areas. The project also includes three levels of rescue systems to ensure passenger safety.”
The ropeway is being developed by National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Garg added that the project represents “a significant leap towards sustainable urban infrastructure” and urged citizens to use the facility responsibly once operational.
The Uttar Pradesh government, in its 2023–24 budget, allocated Rs 1.5 billion for ropeway projects in Varanasi and other urban centres, highlighting its commitment to strengthening public transport and connectivity.
The Varanasi ropeway is expected to transform daily commuting in one of India’s oldest cities, easing congestion while setting a benchmark for similar green transport systems across the country.
