The Maharashtra government is considering constructing a double-decker road-cum-rail bridge over Vasai Creek, aiming to enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Virar. This proposed structure would integrate two significant infrastructure projects: the Uttan-Virar Sea Link (UVSL) and the Mira Road-Virar Metro Line 13.
The UVSL, approved by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), envisions an eight-lane highway connecting Uttan to Virar, facilitating direct access to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. Meanwhile, Metro Line 13 plans a 23-kilometre corridor linking Shivaji Nagar in Mira Road to Virar, aiming to alleviate congestion on the Western Railway network.
Combining these projects into a single bridge structure is expected to streamline transportation, reduce travel times, and support regional economic growth. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is anticipated to be a major funder for this initiative.
MMRDA officials highlight that this integrated approach will not only improve mobility but also unlock economic potential in the northern Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the project's role in fostering a more connected and sustainable urban environment.
The proposed bridge, featuring a metro line on the upper deck and a roadway below, represents a significant step in Maharashtra's infrastructure development, aiming to enhance daily commutes and support the region's growth.
