Eleven firms have submitted bids to carry out geotechnical soil investigations for the 11.65-km-long Phase 1B of Lucknow Metro’s second line, which will connect Charbagh and Vasant Kunj. The proposed line will traverse densely populated areas such as Aminabad, Chowk, and Thakurganj. This investigation will provide crucial data on subsoil conditions, aiding the detailed design of structures like viaducts, stations, and underground sections.

As per the updated Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 1B, the line will consist of approximately 4.286 km of elevated track with 5 stations between Vasant Kunj and Thakurganj, and 6.879 km of underground track with 7 stations between Charbagh and Nawazganj.

The geotechnical investigation will evaluate soil properties, groundwater levels, and other factors that may impact the design and construction, ensuring safety, stability, and cost-efficiency. The findings will be used to refine design parameters and determine the most suitable construction methods and technology, minimising potential damage to existing structures during construction.

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) had invited bids for the geotechnical investigation in August 2024 with an estimated cost of Rs 772.1 million and a 90-day completion period. Among the bidders are Soiltech India Pvt. Ltd, S&R Geotechniques Pvt. Ltd, Arun Soil Lab Pvt. Ltd, Becquerel Industries Pvt. Ltd, Bhaskram Jyotish Anusandhan Kendra Pvt. Ltd, Techpro Engineers Pvt. Ltd, Gaveshana Geosciences Pvt. Ltd, Geomarine Dynamics India Pvt. Ltd, Goma Engineering and Consultancy, Simcon Technology Pvt. Ltd, and CEG Test House and Research Centre Pvt. Ltd. An UPMRC official confirmed that the bids are currently under technical evaluation.

The construction of Phase 1B was approved by the Uttar Pradesh government with an estimated cost of Rs 58.01 billion and is now awaiting approval from the Public Investment Board (PIB) under the finance ministry. The DPR received state government approval in March 2024, followed by a technical clearance from the National Planning Group (NPG) in August. The final step will be obtaining approval from the Union Cabinet after the PIB completes its review.

Once approved, the Charbagh-Vasant Kunj line is expected to significantly boost Lucknow’s metro network by improving connectivity between key areas of the Old City and easing congestion in the region. It will serve as a vital addition to the existing metro infrastructure, enhancing public transportation options and reducing traffic-related pollution. (Hindustan Times)
