The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has awarded the 5.46-kilometre Swargate–Katraj underground metro line contract to Adani Group’s ITD Cementation India Limited, following a competitive bidding process. The tender, valued at Rs 16.44 billion, was the lowest bid received and has been approved, with construction expected to begin by December 2025.

According to Chandrashekhar Tambavekar, Assistant General Manager (Admin and PR) at Maha-Metro, the central government has sanctioned Rs 29.54 billion for the Swargate–Katraj line. The tender process attracted bids from six companies, with ITD Cementation India Limited emerging as the lowest qualified bidder after evaluation on parameters such as quality, technical capability, and experience.

Tambavekar noted that the technical procedures related to loan provisions and project financing will be finalised within the next month. The project’s construction is slated to commence by late 2025, with a completion target of 2029.

The metro stretch will feature five stations — Swargate, Market Yard, Bibwewadi, Balajinagar, and Katraj. Initially, only three stations (Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj) were planned, but two additional stations were included after residents and public representatives requested improved connectivity. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar approved the additions, leading to a revised tender process launched in April 2025.

Once completed, the Swargate–Katraj underground corridor will significantly ease traffic congestion in South Pune and enhance last-mile connectivity for commuters travelling between central and southern Pune.
