The Agra Metro Rail Project has reached a major construction milestone with the successful tunnel boring machine (TBM) breakthrough at Mankameshwar Metro Station, marking the completion of all underground tunnelling works for Line 1. The 14.25 km corridor runs from Sikandra to Taj East Gate, forming the backbone of the city’s future rapid transit system.
This breakthrough concludes the tunnelling under Package AGCC-02, which was awarded in March 2022 by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) to the Afcons – Sam India Consortium. The Rs 18.2 billion contract had a 48-month execution timeline.
Spanning 7.93 km, Package AGCC-02 covers the design and construction of twin tunnels and seven underground stations. These include Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Mankameshwar (Jama Masjid), S.N. Medical College, Agra College, Raja ki Mandi, and RBS College stations. The scope also encompasses architectural finishes, electrical and mechanical systems, tunnel ventilation systems (TVS), and environmental control systems (ECS).
The breakthrough signifies a critical leap towards completing Corridor-1 of the Agra Metro Rail Project, which is expected to improve urban mobility, decongest roads, and enhance connectivity across the historic city.
