Ashoka Buildcon Ltd has been awarded a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) by North Western Railway (Ajmer Division) for a major electrification project.
The contract value stands at Rs 5393.5 million. The scope covers the upgrade of the traction system for 660.81 route-kilometres from 1×25 kV to 2×25 kV, along with required overhead equipment modifications.
Strategic Significance
- The project aligns with Indian Railways’ broader modernisation and electrification drive, aiming to boost efficiency and reduce dependence on diesel traction.
- Upgrading to a 2×25 kV system permits higher speed and load capacity, improving service reliability on the corridor under North Western Railway.
- For Ashoka Buildcon, the order strengthens its infrastructure order-book and underlines its capability in rail electrification works.
Execution & Next Steps
- Ashoka Buildcon is expected to undertake design, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of the upgraded electrification system.
- Key activities will likely include revising overhead equipment (OHE), transformers, substations and associated civil and electrical works. Although no completion timeline was publicly specified, projects of this nature typically span 18-36 months from LoA.
Implications for the Industry
- Suppliers of OHE components, transformers, switchgear and related equipment may see opportunities as the project progresses.
- Contractors specialising in EPC rail electrification may view this award as a signal of increased tendering activity in the Northern & Western zones.
- From a material perspective, elevated demand for copper, aluminium conductors and electrical equipment is expected.
