The Ministry of Railways plans to take up the Second Saraighat Rail-Cum-Road Bridge project in Assam, along with doubling of the 7.2-km railway line between Agthori and Kamakhya stations. The work falls under Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and is intended to add rail and road capacity across the Brahmaputra.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been entrusted with the Agthori-Kamakhya doubling project, which received sanction in 2024. Planning and tendering followed the approval, while geotechnical investigations have been completed and engineering, design and construction drawings are under way.

The centrepiece of the project will be a 1.3-km double-decker bridge across the Brahmaputra, according to a report by news agency ANI. The lower deck will carry two railway lines, while the upper deck will provide a three-lane road and a footpath.

The existing Saraighat Bridge currently carries one railway line and a two-lane road. The new structure is planned with well foundations and a welded Open Web Girder superstructure featuring a 125-metre span, with approach viaducts extending about 600 metres towards Agthori and 200 metres towards Kamakhya.

The project will also connect with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) road approaches towards Jalukbari and the road network on the Agthori side. Digital monitoring and bridge instrumentation are planned for construction oversight and long-term structural monitoring.

With the monsoon season nearing its end, L&T is advancing mobilisation and preparatory work. Piling activities are scheduled to begin in October 2026, marking the next major stage in construction of the bridge and the associated railway doubling works.
