Berhampur Railway Station in southern Odisha is scheduled for a major redevelopment after East Coast Railway (ECoR) sanctioned Rs 3 billion (bn) for a multi-phase project. The funding will be used to expand capacity and improve passenger amenities at one of the region's busiest rail hubs. The station currently handles over 162 trains and 25,000 passengers every day, making it a critical node for connectivity across the state and beyond.

The redevelopment plan includes the construction of three new lines to increase track capacity and reduce congestion during peak travel periods. Officials indicated that adding lines will facilitate smoother train movements and better scheduling, while station upgrades will aim to streamline passenger flow. Work will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to services and to maintain operational continuity during construction.

Project designers plan to upgrade platforms and circulation areas, enhance waiting facilities and improve accessibility for elderly and disabled travellers. Modernisation will also focus on better signage, improved lighting and customer information systems to raise service standards. The phased approach will allow authorities to prioritise high impact interventions first and to monitor outcomes before proceeding to subsequent stages.

Local officials said the scheme is expected to stimulate economic activity by improving freight and passenger movement and by attracting investment into surrounding areas and to support local businesses and employment. Timelines and detailed cost breakdowns will be released as planning advances and environmental and engineering studies are completed.
