The much-anticipated double-decker flyover between Bhajanpura and Yamuna Vihar in northeast Delhi, forming part of the Maujpur to Majlis Park metro corridor, is set to miss its July deadline due to delays in receiving tree-felling permission from the forest department, officials have said.

The viaduct for the metro corridor has been completed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), but construction of the ramps connecting the road to the flyover remains on hold owing to trees obstructing the site. Approximately 70 per cent of the civil work has been completed so far, according to officials.

“The metro viaduct has already been constructed for the entire corridor, and passenger operations are expected to begin within this year. The lower deck of the double-decker — a four-lane flyover to be managed by the Public Works Department (PWD) — is nearly complete. However, the ramp connections cannot be built until tree cutting permissions are granted,” explained Anuj Dayal, principal executive director at DMRC.

This flyover is Delhi’s first double-decker viaduct, with a metro line on the upper deck and a road flyover with two lanes in each direction on the lower level. Upon completion of the upper deck, the flyover will be handed over to the PWD.

The Bhajanpura–Yamuna Vihar stretch spans about 1.4 kilometres and was initially scheduled for completion by the end of July. It is part of a larger 12.32-kilometre corridor that extends the Delhi Metro’s Pink Line.

Due to delays in recent months, PWD Minister Parvesh Verma reviewed the project and urged officials to fast-track permissions. “The project will significantly reduce congestion in the area by improving both road and metro connectivity. We are working to expedite approvals for tree felling and transplantation,” said Verma.

This flyover is the first of three double-decker viaducts planned under Delhi Metro’s Phase 4, announced in 2021. The other two include a 2.4-kilometre viaduct between Sangam Vihar and Ambedkar Nagar on the Aerocity–Tughlaqabad corridor, and a 2.2-kilometre structure between Azadpur and Rani Jhansi Road on the RK Ashram Marg–Janakpuri West corridor. Both are expected to be completed next year.
