BKC May Get Tunnel Linking Metro Line 3 and Bullet Train Terminal

Mumbai is set to witness a major infrastructure upgrade with a proposal for a 1.3-km underground pedestrian tunnel connecting the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) stations of Mumbai Metro Line 3 and the upcoming bullet train terminus, according to a report by Times of India.
The tunnel, designed to streamline commuter transfers and enhance last-mile connectivity, is planned to be constructed 12 metres below ground using the push box method. It will run beneath the Vakola Nallah and involve the demolition of a 7m x 7m knockout wall at the bullet train station— a standard approach in global infrastructure development.
The initiative is expected to benefit passengers, particularly those with luggage, by providing direct access between the Metro and bullet train stations. Currently, Metro Line 3’s BKC station is located near the Income Tax Office junction on Bandra-Kurla Link Road, while the bullet train terminal, though in proximity, lacks a direct link.
The proposed tunnel is likely to reduce surface-level congestion, minimise reliance on autos and taxis, and ensure safer, more reliable transfers between transit systems. However, it remains uncertain whether travelators will be installed to assist passengers.
A meeting of officials was held on 1 July to discuss the proposal and chart the way forward.
