The Union Cabinet has approved an extension of the existing North?South corridor of the Ahmedabad metro from GIFT City to Shahpur. The extension will be three point three three kilometres long and will include three elevated stations. The scheme is scheduled for completion in approximately four years and will be implemented by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 10,673.5 million (mn). The extended corridor is expected to serve approximately 23,702 passengers in 2029 and approximately 58,059 passengers in 2041, enhancing network integration and passenger convenience between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region. Major multinational companies, educational institutions and commercial centres located along the route will directly benefit, notably supporting business, employment and education travel needs.

The project is expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs during construction and about 250 posts in operations and maintenance in the post?construction phase. Additional indirect employment will arise from related activities, contributing to local economic activity and also supporting livelihoods along the corridor. The extension will strengthen connectivity with existing lines and is intended to improve commuter access to commercial hubs and institutions.

The Ahmedabad Metro network already comprises 68.28 kilometres in Phase?I and Phase?II with 53 stations made operational since September 2022 and January 2026 respectively, carrying a daily ridership of approximately 160,000. The new link will integrate with the current system to increase accessibility and provide seamless travel for daily commuters and visitors to the GIFT region. The authorities have indicated that the extension will significantly enhance passenger convenience and regional connectivity.
