Cabinet Clears Lucknow Metro Phase-1B Expansion

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project in Uttar Pradesh, covering 11.165 km with 12 stations — seven underground and five elevated. Once operational, Lucknow will have a 34 km active metro network.

Key Infrastructure Expansion
Phase-1B marks a major step in strengthening Lucknow’s public transport, especially in the city’s oldest and most densely populated areas that currently lack efficient connectivity. The route will link major commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk; healthcare centres like King George’s Medical University; tourist attractions including Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza; and renowned culinary destinations.

Traffic Decongestion and Environment Gains
By offering a fast, reliable alternative to road travel, the extension is expected to ease congestion on Old Lucknow’s busiest routes. Reduced road traffic will help cut travel times, improve safety, and lower carbon emissions compared to fossil fuel-based transport.

Economic and Social Benefits
Enhanced connectivity to the airport, railway stations, and bus depots will improve productivity and stimulate local business growth around new stations. The project will also promote equitable access to public transport, benefiting all socio-economic groups and improving access to essential services.

A Catalyst for Growth
Phase-1B is positioned to transform mobility in Lucknow, fostering tourism, economic activity, and sustainable urban growth, while laying the groundwork for future metro expansion.
