The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the expansion of the Pune Metro Rail Project under Phase 2, clearing the development of Line 4 and its Spur Line 4A.

Line 4 will run 25.52 km from Kharadi to Khadakwasla via Hadapsar and Swargate, featuring 22 elevated stations. The Spur Line, designated 4A, will add a further 6.12 km between Nal Stop and Warje–Manik Baug, with six elevated stations. Together, the two corridors will extend 31.64 km and comprise 28 stations.

Funding for the project will be jointly provided by the Government of India, the Maharashtra government and a mix of bilateral and multilateral lending agencies. Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro) will be responsible for all aspects of implementation, including civil, electrical, mechanical and systems works.

The approved plan carries a total cost of Rs 98.58 billion and is expected to be completed within five years from the date of sanction.

The expansion will connect Pune’s eastern, central and western zones, integrating major residential and commercial districts. It is intended to provide commuters with a more reliable transport option while improving connectivity along the city’s main growth corridors.
