Cemindia Projects Limited (formerly ITD Cementation India Limited) has secured the contract for the Swargate–Katraj underground extension of the Pune Metro, officials from Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) confirmed. A letter of engagement will be issued shortly, followed by a work order next month, with construction expected to begin by year-end.

According to Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) at Maha-Metro, bids were opened on 20 September, and the contract was finalised within 10 days. “The selected company will start work next month,” Gadgil stated.

The 5.5 km underground section, part of Phase II of the Pune Metro expansion, aims to ease traffic congestion along Satara Road and enhance north–south connectivity by linking Swargate and Katraj through several densely populated localities.

The original tender, issued in January 2025, included Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj stations. Following intervention by Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, the revised tender issued on 11 April added Bibwewadi and Balajinagar stations to the plan.

Six leading infrastructure firms — Larsen & Toubro (L&T), J Kumar Infraprojects, Afcons–SAM India, HCC–Kalpataru JV, Tata Projects, and ITD Cementation — participated in the bidding process.

Once operational, the new metro corridor is expected to cut travel time between Swargate and Katraj from 45 minutes to under 15 minutes, providing a faster and more sustainable commute for Pune’s growing urban population.
