Centre Sanctions Rs 84.8 Million for Sikkim Rail Survey

The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned Rs 84.8 million for the Final Location Survey (FLS) of the proposed Melli–Dentam railway line project in Sikkim, marking another important step towards expanding railway connectivity to the southern and western regions of the border state.

The Railway Ministry officially communicated the fund allocation to the Northeast Frontier Railway through a letter issued on 24 October. The project is part of the government’s ongoing effort to integrate Sikkim more closely with India’s national railway network.

Sikkim’s Lok Sabha MP, Indra Hang Subba, had earlier met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on 25 July 2025, urging him to expedite all processes related to the project. He emphasised the importance of timely completion of the FLS, preparation and approval of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), and early execution of the railway line to enhance connectivity, tourism, and national security in the strategically significant region.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways also approved an increase in the frequency of the Dehradun–Tanakpur Express (Train No. 15019/15020). In a letter addressed to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Minister Vaishnaw announced that the train, previously operating once a week, will now run three times a week, starting soon.

Chief Minister Dhami welcomed the decision, describing it as a public-welfare initiative that will strengthen rail connectivity between Garhwal and Kumaon, boost tourism, and stimulate economic and social development across Uttarakhand.

He expressed gratitude to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and noted that, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Central Government continues to actively support Uttarakhand’s development and infrastructure expansion.

The twin developments — the Rs 84.8 million allocation for Sikkim’s FLS and the enhanced rail service in Uttarakhand — reflect the Centre’s broader strategy to strengthen regional connectivity, promote balanced growth, and improve access in hilly and border states.
