Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has approved the implementation of a double-decker metro system spanning 66 km in Vijayawada and 76.9 km in Visakhapatnam. The project funding will adhere to the policy adopted in 2017, requiring the Central government to contribute 100% equity for its execution.
Naidu directed officials to expedite discussions with the Centre regarding funding and begin construction at the earliest, aiming for the metro to be operational within four years. He emphasised that the metro rail project was a commitment made to the state under the State Reorganisation Act and reiterated that the Centre must provide full assistance as per the Act or the 2017 policy. He also announced plans to hold discussions with the Central government to secure necessary support.
The Managing Director of AP Metro Rail Corporation Limited, Ramakrishna Reddy, presented a detailed plan for the metro project. The double-decker metro system will prioritise areas along national and state highways.
In Visakhapatnam, the first phase will include a 15-km stretch from Madhurawada to Thatichetlapalem and a 4-km segment from Gajuwaka to the Visakha Steel Plant. Meanwhile, in Vijayawada, the initial phase will cover a 4.7-km route from Ramavarappadu Ring Road to Nidamanuru.
The approval was granted during a meeting attended by Ministers P Narayana and BC Janardhan Reddy, along with senior officials from various departments. The metro rail initiative is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility and ease congestion in both cities.
