Chennai Metro Awards DPR Contracts for Two Extensions

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has awarded contracts to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) for two key extensions — Lighthouse to High Court and Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery.
According to CMRL, the 7 km Lighthouse–High Court stretch will enhance connectivity along Marina Beach and the State Secretariat. The Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery corridor will extend approximately 21 km, linking the southern suburbs of Tambaram, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai and Velachery with Guindy Metro station on Corridor 1, which runs from Washermenpet to Chennai Airport.
The extension is expected to facilitate multimodal integration at Tambaram, Medavakkam, Velachery and Guindy, improving commuter convenience and reducing travel times. The DPR contracts have been awarded to Systra MVA Consulting India — Rs 3.82 million for the Lighthouse–High Court line and Rs 9.619 million for the Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery route. Both studies are to be completed within 120 days.
The DPRs will evaluate alignment options, ridership potential, multimodal integration opportunities and technical feasibility, forming the foundation for future decision-making and project implementation.
Meanwhile, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed a 3 km three-lane flyover from Sardar Patel Road to Velachery Main Road junction. Once operational alongside the Metro extensions, it is expected to ease congestion at Race Course Road, Five Furlong Road, Velachery Bypass junction and Velachery Main Road.
