The Tamil Nadu government has approved a major expansion of Chennai Metro’s Phase II project by extending the corridor from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram, enhancing connectivity in the city. Originally designed between Light House and Poonamallee, the alignment will now stretch further to cover Sunguvarchatram.

The proposed extension will span 27.9 km and feature 14 metro stations along the route. The project has been allocated Rs 2,126 crore, of which approximately Rs 1,836 crore is earmarked for land acquisition. This extension forms part of a larger 52.94 km corridor connecting Poonamallee to the proposed Parandur greenfield airport, with an overall estimated cost of Rs 15,906 crore.

In a government order issued on 4 September, the State directed Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to begin preparatory works, including land acquisition, road development, and other allied activities, to ensure smooth implementation of the extension.

This approval follows the Tamil Nadu government’s recent sanction of Phase I extension from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam, announced on 3 September 2025. The 15.5 km stretch connecting the airport to the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam has been allocated Rs 1,964 crore for land acquisition, utility shifting, and related works.
