Chennai Metro Receives Two Bids For Additional Escalator Access Works

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has received two bids for additional escalator access works on Line Five of the city metro network. The submissions were received under an open tender process managed by the authority and documentation will be scrutinised for conformity. The works are intended to enhance passenger movement and accessibility at selected stations on the line. The tender notice outlined technical specifications and station-specific requirements to accommodate existing infrastructure.

CMRL will now proceed to technical and commercial evaluation of the bids by its procurement committee. The assessment will consider standards, safety compliance and integration with existing station layouts and lifecycle maintenance implications. Evaluation will include site inspections and verification of past experience. Financial details were not disclosed by the authority at the time of filing.

The escalator access works form part of ongoing efforts to improve last mile connectivity and manage passenger flow as ridership grows. Enhancements of this kind are typically aimed at reducing congestion and improving access for passengers with mobility needs and facilitating smoother boarding and alighting during peak periods. Contractors awarded such works are expected to coordinate closely with CMRL engineers to limit disruption during construction. Work scheduling will be planned to minimise passenger disruption and maintain safety standards during installation.

A contract award is likely after completion of due diligence and necessary approvals from the relevant departments. Timelines for execution will be communicated once the contract is finalised and will include milestones for testing and commissioning. Following award and mobilisation, the authority will issue periodic updates to stakeholders and commuters. The authority indicated that procurement for complementary access projects on other corridors may follow as demand dictates.
