Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has commenced safety certification trials on the upcoming Metro Rail line linking Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction, which is scheduled for commissioning by the end of December.

The trials are being conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), an independent body under the Ministry of Railways, in accordance with the mandatory certification rules for Metro Rail coaches. The tests began on 16 August and will continue for another two weeks.

During the process, passenger comfort will be assessed at varying speeds up to the design limit of 90 kmph. Detailed checks are also being carried out on traction systems, braking performance, and track safety.

A CMRL press note confirmed that successful completion of these trials would certify the corridor and rolling stock as fully compliant with safety standards before opening to the public.

Managing Director MA Siddique added: “These trials are being conducted along Viaduct Section 1A, covering the stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur Junction at 90 kmph, with the distance completed in just nine minutes. We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring the highest levels of safety and reliability.”

The Poonamallee–Porur corridor forms a crucial part of Chennai’s metro expansion, designed to ease traffic congestion and provide faster, cleaner urban transport options to commuters.
