CMRL Awards Rs 2.5 Billion Contracts For City Upgrade, Phase II
CMRL has signed a Rs 5.3 million contract with the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to revitalise three major civic zones in Chennai.
The proposed projects include:
Broken Bridge Area, Adyar (approx. 14,120 sq m): Planned as a landmark leisure destination, featuring an adventure zone, beachfront cafés, and a health loop.
Below the MRTS Line near Indira Nagar Station (6,176 sq m): To be redeveloped as a multifunctional civic space with dynamic lighting, children’s play zones, and potential retail outlets.
Below Velachery Rail Over Bridge (9,270 sq m): To be transformed into a vibrant public space with retail areas and community amenities.
The HUDCO study aims to enhance public infrastructure, promote wellness, and boost local tourism and economic activity, positioning Chennai as a more inclusive and sustainable urban centre.
Additionally, CMRL has awarded a Rs 2.5 billion construction contract to Bridge and Roof Company (India) Limited for the design and construction of 17 entry and exit structures across nine elevated stations on Corridor 3 of the Chennai Metro Phase II project.
The stations covered include Nehru Nagar, Kandanchavadi, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Mettukuppam, PTC Colony, Okkiyampet, Karapakkam, and Okkiyam Thoraipakkam.
A key component of this contract involves transit-oriented development, with commercial spaces being developed near station entrances to provide commuter amenities and generate non-farebox revenue for CMRL.
Once completed, these initiatives will not only enhance commuter convenience and station access but also contribute to Chennai’s broader urban regeneration and sustainable mobility vision.
