02 Dec 2025 CW Team
Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) has been named the Global Sustainable Urban Mobility Project of the Year 2025, strengthening Chennai’s position as one of India’s more forward-looking mass-transit builders. The recognition, presented by the Global Energy and Environment Foundation at its sustainability summit in New Delhi on 20 November, highlights CMRL’s sustained efforts to integrate environmental standards into project design and execution.
The citation was formally received by CMRL Managing Director MA Siddique at a ceremony in Chennai, where senior project and environmental teams outlined the utility’s measures to minimise the ecological impact of its network expansion. CMRL has implemented scientifically planned compensatory plantation, enhanced dust-control systems, real-time noise and vibration monitoring, and the use of low-impact construction materials across multiple sites.
This marks the second consecutive year that CMRL has been recognised at the Global Sustainability Awards, reflecting a broader shift towards greener construction practices and safer, more sustainable urban-mobility infrastructure in Chennai.
