Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu (LG) urged stronger last-mile connectivity for Metro commuters after a review of the city’s network and a ride on the system that included interactions with fellow residents. He described the Delhi Metro as a reliable and efficient mode of public transport that helps address several urban challenges. The visit formed part of a briefing and assessment of ongoing expansion and operational developments.

Sandhu met the managing director of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation at Lok Niwas to receive updates on progress and planned extensions of the network. Officials provided briefings on construction timelines, station upgrades and service improvements. The review emphasised timely completion of projects to meet growing commuter demand.

The lieutenant governor underlined the need to improve connections between Metro stations and nearby residential and commercial areas to enhance convenience and accessibility. He advocated better integration of feeder services and local transport options to ease first and last mile travel and to boost ridership. Emphasis was placed on coordinated planning with municipal agencies and transport operators.

Officials were urged to prioritise measures that make daily travel smoother for residents, including pedestrian access, dedicated feeder routes and information systems that link different modes. The LG highlighted that strengthening support services around stations would increase the utility of the Metro for a wider cross section of the city. Continued monitoring and stakeholder engagement were recommended to ensure benefits reach commuters.

He called for improved signage, secure bicycle parking and last mile electric vehicle options to serve short trips, and suggested real time information and integrated ticketing to facilitate seamless transfers. Authorities were asked to consider accessibility features for elderly and differently abled commuters and to enhance safety measures during peak hours. The LG recommended periodic progress reviews to track outcomes and adjust priorities as needed.
