The Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line, connecting Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden, has achieved complete unattended train operations (UTO), marking a significant milestone in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) move towards full automation. Every train on the corridor now runs without a driver, with train operators removed from service entirely.

UTO is also being introduced on the Pink Line between Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar, with full automation expected in the next three to four months. Delhi Metro first initiated driverless operations in 2020, implementing them in carefully phased stages approved by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety.

For the Magenta Line, Stage I began in May 2024 with the removal of cab partition doors and gradual phasing out of the driving console, though an operator remained in the cab. By August 2024, Stage II allowed operators to move freely within the train, and Stage IIIA reduced their presence to every alternate service. Stage IIIB in May 2025 removed operators completely, making the line fully driverless.

The Pink Line’s automation began in March 2025, reached Stage II by June 2025, and is on track for full UTO within months. Once both lines are automated, Delhi Metro will have 97 km of driverless corridors within its 395 km Delhi-NCR network, placing it among the world’s largest driverless metro systems.

According to DMRC officials, the advanced technology will deliver more frequent, punctual, and safe services while reducing manual intervention, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and providing a smoother, more reliable travel experience for commuters.

Driverless operations are also planned for all three Phase IV priority corridors — RK Ashram Marg–Janakpuri West (Magenta Line extension), Aerocity–Tughlaqabad (Golden Line), and Majlis Park–Maujpur (Pink Line extension). Additionally, three more Phase IV corridors — Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block (Golden Line extension), Inderlok–Indraprastha (Green Line extension), and Rithala–Narela–Kundli (Red Line extension) — have been approved, with construction yet to commence.
