Delhi Metro Begins Mid-Life Upgrade Of 70 Blue And Red Line Trains

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, hereafter DMRC, has begun an extensive mid-life refurbishment programme covering 70 trains on the Red and Blue lines. These trains were part of the earliest fleet inducted between 2002 and 2007 and have completed almost two decades of service. The renovation is being carried out in three phases and 31 trains have already undergone upgrades. The third phase will cover 22 Blue Line trains and is scheduled for completion by November 2027.

DMRC inspected the first refurbished train of the third phase before introducing it for passenger service, a step that underlines the organisation's focus on maintaining quality and safety standards across the network. The phased approach allows work to proceed without major disruption to operations and provides scope for incremental learning and technical adjustments. Refurbishment work is progressing steadily across multiple depots and workshops to meet the planned timelines.

Upgrades to the trains include an advanced electrical panel intended to improve performance, new jumper cables and connectors to enhance reliability and infrastructure prepared for future technology additions. Coaches will be equipped with an IP-based passenger announcement and information system, CCTV surveillance and LCD-based dynamic route maps and display screens to deliver real-time updates on routes and station arrivals. The systems are also designed to strengthen communication between train crews and control centres during operational incidents.

Safety enhancements feature a modern fire detection system in each coach, incorporating smoke and heat sensors to improve early detection. Additional passenger conveniences comprise mobile and laptop charging points fitted across all coaches to make daily travel more convenient. DMRC expects the overall work to extend the service life of the fleet while improving reliability, safety and the commuter experience on two of the network's major corridors.
