Delhi Metro Corporation To Procure 68 Coaches For Red Line Extension

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced plans to procure 68 coaches to equip the Red Line extension to Gurugram. The corporation said the acquisition is intended to support the extended corridor and accommodate rising commuter demand. The additional rolling stock will be integrated with the existing fleet to maintain scheduled frequencies and enhance passenger capacity on the extended route.\n\nThe procurement is set to be conducted through the corporation's standard tendering procedures and will involve technical evaluation, supplier qualification and contract award stages. The DMRC indicated that selection criteria will emphasise compliance with operational specifications, safety standards and maintainability. Manufacturing, delivery schedules and acceptance testing will be aligned to commissioning requirements for the new section.\n\nOnce delivered, the coaches will undergo static and dynamic tests as part of a comprehensive commissioning programme prior to revenue operations. The process will include integration with signalling systems, trials on the extended track and verification of compatibility with existing depots and stabling facilities. Staff training and operational familiarisation runs will precede the opening for passengers.\n\nThe corporation expects the fleet augmentation to ease peak hour congestion and improve service reliability on the Red Line corridor. Enhanced capacity is expected to translate into shorter waiting times and more consistent headways, contributing to a better commuting experience for those travelling to and from Gurugram. Maintenance regimes will be adapted to accommodate the expanded fleet.\n\nThe announcement reflects ongoing investment in urban transit infrastructure and the priority given to extending rapid transit connectivity in the national capital region. Stakeholders will monitor the procurement timeline and subsequent milestones as the project progresses. The DMRC reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe and efficient metro services while coordinating with local authorities to support integration with other modes of transport.
