Delhi government has announced the creation of the Delhi Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (DUMTA) to coordinate the city's fragmented public transport systems and improve integration across modes. The authority will bring together planning, regulatory oversight and operational agencies to enable cohesive service delivery across buses, metro and paratransit. Officials said the new body will aim to reduce duplication, enhance route planning and promote integrated ticketing. The initiative is expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity and encourage greater use of public transport.

DUMTA is to coordinate with municipal bodies, transport operators and neighbouring state agencies to harmonise standards and timetables and to support a single mobility framework. It will develop data sharing protocols and performance monitoring systems to inform evidence-based decisions and infrastructure planning. Officials said integrated planning will seek to optimise bus routes, balance feeder services and align schedules with metro operations. Emphasis will be placed on improving accessibility for persons with reduced mobility and enhancing equipment maintenance regimes.

Funding arrangements will involve existing budgetary allocations and coordinated investments from participating agencies while seeking central support where necessary. The authority is expected to prepare phased implementation plans prioritising high demand corridors and measures that can be rolled out quickly. Officials indicated that adoption of intelligent transport systems and real-time passenger information will be prioritised to improve commuter experience. The programme is described as part of a broader effort to reduce congestion, lower emissions and improve urban liveability.

Stakeholder consultations are to involve operators, commuters and civil society to ensure that reforms address user needs and operational realities. The authority will establish periodic review mechanisms to monitor outcomes and adjust policies based on performance indicators. Officials suggested that transparency in procurement and clear institutional roles will be essential to build trust and sustain reforms. If implemented effectively the measure is expected to make public transport more reliable, affordable and attractive, thereby supporting a shift away from private vehicle reliance.
