The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed the construction of a foot overbridge (FOB) across the Outer Ring Road to improve access to the Pitampura-Prashant Vihar Metro Station. The proposal has been forwarded to the Public Works Department (PWD) for approval, following intervention by Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta.
Officials said the planned FOB is intended to provide direct and safer connectivity for residents travelling from Prashant Vihar and Rohini, addressing long-standing concerns over limited access to the station. At present, commuters coming from the Prashant Vihar side reportedly do not have a direct entry point and are required to take longer routes, causing inconvenience.
The issue was raised by several Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs), which highlighted difficulties faced by commuters living across the Outer Ring Road, particularly in the Majlis Park to Deepali Chowk stretch. Gupta took up the matter with DMRC after receiving representations, including from a senior citizens’ welfare group. He urged authorities to ensure safe and barrier-free access for elderly people, persons with disabilities and patients.
In response, DMRC prepared a feasibility plan for the FOB. However, officials noted that technical modifications may be required before implementation. The proposed design must comply with safety standards, including height requirements under an existing flyover maintained by PWD. This could necessitate adjustments in road geometry to meet engineering norms.
Apart from the FOB, DMRC has also proposed additional pedestrian-friendly measures such as a zebra crossing near one of the station entry points to improve at-grade access. Officials added that a lift facility from ground level to the concourse is already available.
The broader connectivity plan has been submitted to the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure Planning and Engineering Centre for review. Construction will begin only after approvals are granted by the concerned agencies.
Reacting to the development, Gupta said, “Safe and easy access should be ensured for every citizen, especially senior citizens,” while urging faster action for timely implementation.
