As part of the second phase of the Old Gurugram Metro project, five new underpasses will be constructed to ease congestion in key areas of the city, officials from Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) have confirmed. The detailed project report (DPR) for these underpasses will be prepared by Systra, the consultancy agency engaged by GMRL.
The underpasses are planned at Sector-3A/4/5 Chowk near Railway Road; from Sector-5 junction to Sheetla Mata Road (one-way); Bajghera Road to Krishna Chowk; Rejangla Chowk to Udyog Vihar via Palam Vihar Road; and Palam Vihar Road Junction. The estimated cost for all five underpasses stands at approximately Rs 3.5 billion. Officials stated these projects aim to alleviate traffic congestion in Old Gurugram significantly.
Meanwhile, a flyover at Umang Bhardwaj Chowk will be built separately by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
GMRL is already working on the construction of a 28.5-km Metro line connecting Millennium City Centre to Cyber City. In the first phase, a civil works tender worth Rs 12.86 billion has been floated for the section between Millennium City Centre and Sector-9. Under this phase, the construction of the Bakhtawar Chowk underpass—originally managed by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA)—will now be carried out by GMRL at a cost of approximately Rs 804.5 million.
The second phase of the Metro project was discussed during a GMDA board meeting chaired by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. It was decided that GMRL would manage both the DPR and construction of all five underpasses, with funding to be provided by GMDA. Having the same agency handle both Metro and underpass construction is expected to accelerate delivery.
The Metro route in the first phase will pass through Millennium City Metro Station, Sector-45, Cyber Park, Sector-47, Subhash Chowk, Sector-48, Sector-72A, Hero Honda Chowk, Udyog Vihar Phase-6, Sector-10, Sector-37, Basai Village, and Sector-9.
Phase two will extend to stations at Sector-7, Sector-4, Sector-5, Ashok Vihar, Sector-3, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar Extension, Palam Vihar, Sector-23A, Sector-22, Udyog Vihar Phases 4 and 5, and Cyber City.
