GMRL Seeks Land To Build Power Substation For Gurugram Metro

Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) has initiated a request to acquire land to construct a power substation to support the Gurugram metro network. The move aims to strengthen power supply resilience and accommodate planned extensions of the system. Company officials have engaged local authorities to identify suitable sites and to outline technical requirements.

The proposed substation is intended to provide dedicated high voltage feed and to reduce reliance on the municipal distribution network, enhancing operational reliability during peak hours. Planning documents indicate that the facility will include transformers, switchgear and control systems designed to meet the load profile of current and future services. GMRL has signalled that coordination with the electricity distribution company will be essential to synchronise grid connections and obtain necessary clearances.

Authorities expect the land acquisition process to consider urban constraints and to minimise impact on residents and businesses, with measures to address resettlement and compensation if required. Environmental and technical assessments will form part of the approvals process and will seek to address noise, safety and electromagnetic concerns. Timelines for construction will be subject to statutory approvals and to the completion of detailed design and procurement.

The substation is presented as a strategic investment to support reliable frequency and voltage control and to enable future capacity increases as ridership grows. Funding is likely to be arranged through internal allocations and through collaboration with state agencies, while cost estimates will be finalised after site selection. GMRL intends to keep stakeholders informed as plans progress and to ensure that project delivery aligns with broader urban transport objectives. Successful implementation is expected to improve service consistency and to support the metro network's role in the city transport system.
