India Metro Rail Growth Transforms Urban Mobility

India's metro rail network has expanded rapidly over the past decade, becoming a key pillar of urban infrastructure and delivering economic and social benefits, according to a recent government analysis. The operational network grew from 248 km in 2014 to about 1,095 km in 2025, and services expanded from five cities in 2014 to 26 cities by 2025, extending mass rapid transit to a much larger share of the urban population. Systems now operate across major metropolitan centres including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
