India is on track to have the world's second-largest urban metro network within the next two years, according to Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The expansion is part of the government's broader urban infrastructure development strategy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

Currently, over 1,000 kilometres of metro rail projects are under construction in various cities, including Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Ahmedabad. These projects are part of the government's commitment to enhancing urban mobility and infrastructure.

The Union Minister highlighted the significant increase in investment in the urban sector, which has surged from Rs 1.78 lakh crore during 2004-2014 to Rs 18.07 lakh crore from 2014 onwards. This investment is aimed at transforming urban landscapes across the country, making cities more livable and sustainable.

Puri emphasised the success of various urban development missions such as the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), which has achieved 100% access to household and community toilets, and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), which has sanctioned over 1.19 crore houses, with more than 76 lakh houses already delivered to beneficiaries. These initiatives have not only improved living conditions but also empowered women by providing house titles in their names.

The government's focus on urban development is also evident in the introduction of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), which facilitates seamless travel across different modes of transport. This aligns with the vision of creating world-class urban spaces that enhance the ease of living for all residents.
