Indian Railways achieves record freight loading in May 2024
According to an official statement, the national transporter reported that 139.16 million tonnes (MT) of freight were carried in May 2024, which represented a 3.6% increase compared to the 134.16 MT loaded in May 2023. It was also stated that the freight revenue for May 2024 amounted to Rs 152.30, billion up from Rs 146.41 billion in the same month of the fiscal year 2023-24.
It was further mentioned that this achievement marked the 56th consecutive month of highest ever freight loading since October 2020.
The cumulative freight loading for April and May of fiscal year 2024-25 reached 267.47 MT. Coal remained the most transported commodity on the national transporter at 72.01 MT, followed by iron ore at 14.61 MT.
In the previous fiscal year ending March 2024, Indian Railways loaded 1591 MT of freight, an increase from 1512 MT in the preceding fiscal. Additionally, records of railway electrification, new lines, and track replacement were set during the fiscal year 2023-24.
Within goods loading, the Railways transported 787.61 MT of Coal, 180.95 MT of Iron ore, 153.80 MT of Cement, and 114.36 MT of Balance Other Goods for the full fiscal year 2023-24.
Officials stated that this achievement was a result of the 'Hungry For Cargo' initiative of Indian Railways aimed at enhancing service delivery at competitive prices.
